Thefts frustrating for gardeners at Stettler Community Gardens

The Stettler Community Gardens have become popular places for in-town residents looking to grow their own flowers, fruits and vegetables, however, they have been also been popular with thieves this year.

Barb Munholland says this year was the first year she rented space at one of the gardens. She reserved the plot to grow some of her larger vegetables like pumpkins, squash and potatoes. Unfortunately, ¾ of the squash, two hills of potatoes and the largest pumpkin they had grown has been stolen. Munholland says that another person at her garden has had an entire row of carrots stolen as well.

“The sad thing is, the squash and pumpkin were nowhere near being ready to harvest so it will likely be a waste.”

With the constant heat and minimal rain, people have been watering their plots two or three times almost daily, just to keep their plants alive. She says that while she and her husband were away on vacation, they hired a girl to take care of their space while they were gone.

Munholland says she thinks the community gardens are a great project but likely won’t be renting space again next year.

She says the plots are inexpensive so if someone really wanted to grow their own, it would be very little cost to get started.

“I hope people really need the food that helped themselves.”
