Heartland Youth Centre and The Family Resource Network teamed up to bring Soapbox Derby racing to downtown Stettler on June 11, 2022.
A crowd gathered to watch the 12 cars and drivers who entered the derby, each sponsored by a local family or business.
The cars were inspected and weighed by members of the Stettler Car Club, who also looked after announcing and timing the races, and Kal Tire Stettler provided the tires used for bumpers for the track. The ramp building and management were provided by Vortex, Napa Stettler, the Kinsmen Club of Stettler and Score Projects, who provided the truck used for the ramp.
Stettler RCMP recorded speeds as the cars came off the ramp. The maximum speed was just over 20km/h!
Christel Shuckburgh of Heartland Youth Centre stated, “FRN and HYC can’t wait for next year!”
Three top prizes were awarded - Fastest car, Farthest Run, and Fan Favorite Design (chosen by the participants).
The organizers want to thank the parents, grandparents and community members who helped build the cars and put on the event.
