The Stettler Hospital & Care Centre hosts the Auxiliary Gift Shop, a volunteer-driven nonprofit store that uses funds to support the hospital. Unfortunately, COVID has caused many issues for the gift shop. Restrictions and shutdowns were a significant problem, and the sudden shortage of volunteers has been an issue.

The Gift Shop stocks many different items, from consumables like snacks, toothpaste and magazines, and items such as toys, handmade slippers and gift trinkets, some of which are in the shop on consignment from local makers. Some of the items in the shop are donated to them by local individuals and businesses.

Volunteer Shaun Derr kept the vending machines at the hospital filled and serviced during the shutdowns, aa the Gift Shop also owns these. This kept some money coming in and gave hospital visitors a place to grab a snack and a drink.

Funds raised by the Hospital Auxiliary Shop go to various projects around the hospital. The shop is trying to help Stettler Health Services Foundation with the atrium renovations and would also like to purchase benches and plants to spruce up the hospital’s exterior. The group is planning a Landscaping Work Bee in the Spring.

Auxiliary Gift Shop Board Member Karin Phibbs says they “hope to open fully this year” and that right now, they are only open limited hours because of the shortage of volunteers.

Volunteers for the gift shop must be approved by AHS, including vaccination proof and a security background check. To apply, please contact Stettler Hospital Volunteer coordinator Jaiden Henry at (403) 740-8465

The Auxillary Gift Shop Board is made up of around eight people who meet up to 4 times per year. This has been changed to virtual meetings and emails during the pandemic. Those interested in volunteering for the board can contact the Stettler Hospital Auxilliary Gift Shop on Facebook.
