Scott Douglas plans a handcycle trip to Drumheller to raise funds and awareness for SCIA

On a rainy and windy June 5th, 2021, Stettler resident Scott Douglas and a group of friends took a bike trip from Stettler to the South Hill Walmart in Red Deer. Despite the weather, Scott said the trip went well. Injured in an accident in 2004, Scott made the trip on his handcycle.

The cycling trip was a way for Douglas to help raise funds for Spinal Cord Injury Alberta (SCIA). The group initially set a fundraising goal of $2500, but they raised almost $5000, which included $150 they raised from passing motorists on their trip.

Douglas now plans to go on another handcycle fundraiser, but this time, the group is going south on Highway 56 to Drumheller. The young man says he will not worry about the notoriously narrow shoulders on the busy southbound highway as he plans to have a pilot vehicle in front and behind his group for this trip.

“I just wanted to say that I'm inspired and determined to show everyone that life is such a beautiful thing…….” - Scott Douglas

Douglas says he is making the trip to help raise awareness, not only for SCIA, which he says helped him a great deal after his accident, but also to show people that life is what you make of it. He is grateful to have the opportunity to give back to SCIA, and he wants to let people know that the legacy we leave behind to benefit others is what is important to him.

Douglas and his friends plan to leave Stettler at 8 am on July 10th.
