The true story of the woman who fought to exonerate Steven Truscott

May 9, 2022 @ 9:15am - Press Release

The Steven Truscott story became an international story when a 14 year old schoolboy was sentenced to hang for killing and raping a 12 year schoolmate.

When Steven was released on parole after 10 years, he met Marlene Truscott, Canada’s Erin Brockovich, who fought for justice and for her husband Steven to be exonerated from a crime he did not commit.

Steven’s case was truly a miscarriage of justice, as the police pointed to Steven and ignored any evidence that pointed anywhere else. Steven’s case was largely responsible for the abolition of capital punishment in Canada.

Marlene Director, Wendy Hill-Tout, has co-produced 5 UK co-productions and has produced, co-produced, and executive produced over 30 documentaries, features and television programs. Documentaries include the award winning “Shattered Dreams”, “No Place To Go”, and “Woman Behind the Mask” and “Pieces of a Dream” with the National film Board, and “Living the Music” and “Terri Clarke: Real”.

“Marlene is a female story, about a woman who had the courage to challenge the male establishment, the justice system, the police, the military, the medical system. Everything we held sacred. It is a story about women, who were written out of history. In Marlene, their story steps into the light. It’s about the truth buried in the darkness, in the boxes, of all of our lives, and that we must as individuals shine a light in the darkness. It’s about the importance of fighting for justice, because without it, what kind of country do we have?” - Wendy Hill Tout, Director of Marlene

Marlene has been released across Canada in Calgary, Edmonton, Drumheller, Saskatoon, Regina, Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, London and other cities in various cinemas across the country and there will be a one-time showing at the Jewel Theatre on Wednesday May 11th @ 6pm with a Q&A after the film with the director and one of the actors.
