Seasonal Sweets - Crab Apple Pie

This time of year, the apple trees are heavy with produce. This recipe is perfect for those small sour apples because you don't have to peel them, and they sweeten up when you cook them! It's a family favourite of ours.

Crab Apple Pie

6-8 cups unpeeled, chopped crab apples

¼ cup water

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp Maple syrup

2 tbsp Flour

½ tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp salt

  1. In a large skillet, mix the chopped apples, water, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Bring to a simmer. Cook approx. Ten minutes or until the apples have softened.

  2. Remove the apples from the liquid. Keep the liquid in the skillet and add the butter and maple syrup. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer and reduce until there is only approx ½ cup of liquid.

  3. To the apples, add flour, cinnamon, and salt.

4. Add apples into your premade pie crust and pour the reduced liquid over the top. Cover with top pie crust and bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes.
