The Stettler Tsunamis Swim club is starting the 2021-22 season off 15 members strong. Club President Arlene Morton says that this is up slightly from last season, but also down from pre-pandemic years.

Members range all the way from beginners at 5 years old to more advanced members at 15 years of age. Swimmers learn the four competitive swimming strokes including backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and freestyle. Arlene says that they are a competitive club, and one of their goals is to make members feel confident enough to compete. The club also boasts one para-swimmer.

The club’s head coach, Jaroslav Bursik, is a former Czech National swim team member who currently resides in Castor.

“You never know who the next olympian will be,” says Arlene

Over the last year and a half, the pandemic has greatly affected the club with the cancellations of their swim meets. Swimmers and their parents really enjoy travelling to competitions, so not being able to attend meets has been difficult.

The pandemic has affected enrollment and Arlene says that growing the club is something they really want to do in the future.
