Like all events worldwide, the Stettler Music Festival has had a rocky couple of years adapting to current health-based restrictions while still trying to provide a good experience for performers.
The music festival's performance venues are the Performing Arts Centre and the Stettler Alliance Church. As of mid-February, the Music Festival committee is still waiting on more information from the Clearview School Division on what restrictions will be in place for that venue. For 2022 the hope is to go ahead with in-person performances while still following the required health restrictions as they hope to welcome live audiences once again.
Board President Wendy Staal said, “This year, we hope to have all performances live and in-person.”
Stettler Music Festival is an adjudicated festival, meaning professionals with specific knowledge and experience assess the performances and provide positive and constructive feedback. In addition, they hope to nurture performing arts at all levels while helping performers cultivate self-esteem.
Some scholarships are awarded for ages 18 and under, and summer workshop scholarships are also available. Adjudicators recommend performers in piano, vocal, speech and music theatre to go to the provincial music festival in June. Each year, the Festival gives an Award of Excellence to someone who encourages the performing arts community members.
This year’s music festival will be bigger than last year. However, it will still be smaller than pre-pandemic years, and Wendy says they hope to continue rebuilding and growing.
The Stettler Music Festival is a non-profit organization that relies entirely on donations from the community. They charge a small entrance fee and accept donations from those who watch the performances. Many volunteer opportunities are available with the Stettler Music Festival.
