The Rochon Sands Disc Golf Course has been a grassroots effort by a few locals but it is being enjoyed by many.

The course was installed in 2017 and according to avid course supporters, Emily Morrison and Peter Kendrick, the course was used more than 406 times last year according to the app UDisc, which helps people find disc golf courses and tracks their rounds. Morrison says that the course probably saw even more use by people who don’t use the app.

The Rochon Sands course is considered a great one for beginners and the $2 honour box to play, keeps it’s fairly casual.

Morrison says the Rochon Sands community put the course in and the welded baskets were sponsored by local residents and businesses.

The popularity of the course has increased over time, and Morrison, Kendrick, Kirk Herrick, Kyler Wilson, and Stephen Lachance along with other friends have volunteered their time to improve the course.

The project this year has been to improve the tee pads on the course, as well as bring in proper Discgolf baskets with the group fronting much of the cost of 18 new baskets for the course. In addition to the existing sponsors, the group has reached out to local businesses and community groups who were more than happy to sponsor a basket.

Kendrick says they weren’t too concerned about fronting the cost, because the support they get from Stettler, and those at Rochon Sands has been incredible.

The volunteer group does have to get permission from the governing body of Rochon Sands before they do anything, but they say they have been able to establish a great rapport and are well-supported by them.

“They’ve given us a lot of creative control.” Peter Kendrick

The group is hoping to have the improvements done by the time of the annual Discgolf tournament in August. The event, organized by Rochon Sands, has seen incredible turnouts, with players coming from other clubs around the province.

Players have remarked that the Rochon Sands course is impressive and that they’ve had a fantastic time at the annual tournament.
