On April 15th the Stettler Fire Department were dispatched to a building fire on Highway 12, behind the former NOW Distribution (JEN Supply) building.

Five Star Enterprises, a waste management company owned by long-time local business owners Kerry and Marg Short, was completely engulfed by the fire that spread through the length of the building creating a thick column of smoke that could be seen for miles in all directions.

Traffic in both directions had to be diverted close to the fire since the nearest fire hydrant was on the south side of Highway 12 and the hose had to be stretched across the Highway.

The blaze continued until well into the evening with locals showing up to offer assistance to the emergency crews, diverting traffic, lending equipment and manpower, and several people showed up with food and beverages for the firefighters, RCMP, and EMS.

Despite best efforts, the building was a complete loss. Wally’s Backhoe Services was brought in to help move the debris and ensure there were no other hotspots waiting to reignite.

No injuries from the fire were reported.
