Canada Day: Statement from Premier Kenney (video)

Premier Jason Kenney issued the following statement to celebrate Canada Day:

“As we recognize Canada Day this year, our festivities may not resemble the large gatherings of the past. But I believe our celebrations are more relevant than ever, because we have more reason to rejoice in what it means to be Canadians and Albertans.

“Faced with the pandemic’s threat of isolation and loneliness, Albertans instead chose to reach out to one another. They found ways to connect via social media and teleconferencing. They delivered groceries to the elderly. They ordered takeout to support local restaurants. They applauded front-line health-care heroes with daily rounds of joyful cheers.

“In addition to grassroots solutions like these, Albertans have also sought out more organized ways of giving, like Alberta’s Bits and Pieces Program, and Alberta’s Northern Lights Volunteer Program. Both programs have seen literally thousands of businesses and individuals step up to say, ‘How can I help?’

“I continue to be deeply touched by the outpouring of support we’ve seen. When times are tough, Albertans’ generosity always shines through.

“This Canada Day, please join me in celebrating all that Albertans have done to benefit their communities and fellow Albertans during these uncertain times.”
