According to the Canadian Government, these are the most likely natural disasters to occur in Alberta:
Avalanches
Earthquakes
Floods
Landslides
Power outages
Severe storms
Tornadoes
Wildfires
The government website also includes other dire situations, such as bomb threats and nuclear emergencies, but, happily, they are not considered imminent threats to Albertans.
Emergency Preparedness Week is May 7-13, 2023, and both the federal and provincial governments have online resources to help Albertans prepare for and deal with natural disasters. The program, which started in 1996, outlines three steps to prepare for an emergency:
Know the risks in your area
Make a plan
Get an emergency kit
Both the Canadian and Alberta governments recommend having enough supplies for your family and animals to last 72 hours, including food, water and medications. The province also suggests having cash on hand in case there's no access to your bank (in person or online), and keeping all receipts in case you have to be evacuated.
Resources
Evacuated farmers and ranchers with ag and livestock-related questions can contact the wildfire resource line at 310-4455.
