The Stettler & District Handibus Society provides safe and reliable wheelchair accessible transportation to seniors over sixty, or persons with disabilities in the town & County of Stettler. Started in 1978, the Stettler & District Handibus has been operating for over 42 years. The organization has, remarkably, been funded off of donations from local organizations supporting non-profits, donations from the community and support from the town and County of Stettler.
In 2019 the Stettler & District Handibus had a total of 6,811 passengers. As of January 31st, 2020, they have had 553 in-town rides and 10 out of town. The 12 passenger bus with a wheelchair lift and 12 seats makes numerous loops throughout the community Monday through Friday and is used for in-town transportation. The smaller minivan is used to help residents get to specialist appointments in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary.
A new bus was recently purchased and will be delivered in March but due to the number of kilometers put on the bus every week the board must begin immediately saving for the next purchase in four to five years. The costs of the bus, the salaries to keep the bus going and the bus maintenance are the biggest expenses of the service.
The board is made up of nine members including Chairperson Cindy MacDonell, Vice-Chair Vicki Savage, Secretary Terri Visser and Treasurer Diane Ecklund, as well as several directors. The meetings are held once a month (excluding July, August, and December) at the FCSS building on main street.
Donations are critical to continue the operations and can be made in person or sent by mail to the address below. Please follow Stettler & District Handibus on Facebook
