On Monday May 4th, a small demonstration protesting the latest COVID-19 lockdown was held on the corner of the Stettler Sobeys.
Demonstrators carried signs saying “NO MORE MASKS” and “FREEDOM IS ESSENTIAL FEAR IS NOT” and waved at people while standing on the corner of 47th Ave and 50 St.
Demonstrators walked down main street to the Town of Stettler Office and then back to Sobey’s corner with their signs and waved at passing vehicles and people who honked in support.
The demonstration organizer we spoke to requested they not be named for this article and said that despite what some people might believe, it wasn’t about being “anti-maskers” but an effort to engage the public in the on-going COVID crisis.
The organizer stated they are trying to take a stand against a government they feel is either asleep, or simply not doing enough for the province and that the government’s ongoing efforts and focus on the health risks of COVID has done more harm than good.
“We need to get this government awake…” - Organizer
The organizer went on to say that they want to see the economy going again and feel the government hasn’t done anything to help small businesses. Another concern voiced was the effects on children and the elderly of the on-again, off-again restrictions.
The organizer we spoke to stated that they are working with others to organize more of these events.
