On June 11th Stettler’s main street will host several community events: the Steel Wheel Stampede parade, the Stettler Car Club’s Show ‘N Shine, and the Stettler Soapbox Derby.
This year’s Soapbox Derby is being hosted by a partnership of the Heartland Youth Centre and the Stettler Family Resource Network, working with the Stettler Kinsmen Club and the Stettler Car Club.
Eleven soapbox racers are currently under construction with fourteen participants (some kids will be sharing racers). The Kinsmen and Vortex Production Services constructed the ramp for the races and the Stettler Car Club will be lending their expertise to timing the race and providing safety inspection of the soapbox racers.
Lisa Tait of the Family Resource Network says, “We saw soapbox as a way to bring people together.”
She also said that Soapbox racing was a fun way to get male role models involved in their programming.
The organizers invite the community to watch the Soapbox races and cheer on the participants at noon on June 11th. The race ramp will be on the street in front of the Town of Stettler Office, alongside the Show ‘N Shine. Racers will compete for prizes for the Fastest Racer, the Racer that travels farthest, and the Best Decorated Racer.
