Wanda Niehaus announces her candidacy for the County of Stettler Ward 5 Councillor seat.

When asked why she was interested in running for County Council, Wanda Niehaus stated she is concerned that the County taxes don’t seem to be going as far as they used to and that the current administration is talking about raising them again. She states she and her husband own property in Paintearth county where she says the taxes are notably lower but understands there may be reasons for this she is not aware. Taxes are just one of her reasons for wanting to get involved.

Niehaus states that she is also getting involved because she wants to help preserve the county way of life for generations to come. She feels it’s important for people who want to see change to get involved and help make change. She explained that she believes council needs new members often, and that it should be something people do who want see positive changes.

“The county needs fresh ideas and fresh eyes to see where changes can be made.” Wanda Niehaus.

Another concern of Niehaus are the conditions of the county roads. She says that the 1.5” rock that council approved to lay down on the roads has been a bad decision leading to damaged windshields and tires. She agrees it’s important to use something that will preserve the condition of the roads, but that this has been a misstep that needs to be corrected before it causes a serious accident, and possible loss of life.

Niehaus is also concerned that although there are some great equipment operators employed by County, some of them need more training to help them be more effective and bring the quality of service up across the county.

Niehaus says what she holds dear, and will bring to her role as a council member, is accountability. She strongly believes in owning up to mistakes she has made, and that it’s important people can trust you to fix your errors when they’ve come to light. She is frustrated to be told things like ‘I will bring this up with public works, but it’s out of my hands.’ She says that if a concern is brought to a counselor, it’s important they follow through with it.

The candidate encourages people who want to see change to get involved. She says that federal and provincial governments have started to overreach and are making it hard for local town, county and school boards, and that is something she feels needs to stop.
