Pruning Tomatoes
Tomato plants grow like crazy at this time of year! Regular pruning will keep them healthy and give the fruit the best chance to grow big and sweet. Pruning also means checking over the plants and discovering potential problems early, when they are most likely to be solved without causing issues with your harvest.
To prune tomato plants, remove the lowest leaves and any leaves touching the ground. Second, remove any “suckers,” which are the small branches that grow out of the ‘armpit’ where the leaf meets the stem. Pruning can be done with your fingernails or with a pair of scissors (they will get sticky!).
While you are pruning, it is also an excellent time to add more clips or zip ties to keep your plants growing up their stakes.
