Gardening Tips for Zone 3B - September 1st Week

FALL GARLIC

Use Hardneck seed garlic; it's the most cold hardy. Hardneck varieties also grow delicious garlic scapes.

Break garlic bulbs into cloves for a new plant for each clove.

Loosen the soil in your garlic bed to start establishing roots before the ground gets too cold.

Plant cloves pointy end up; the point is where the new stem will grow. You should plant the cloves two inches deep and in a grid six inches apart. Mark where you planted the cloves!

Cover the bed with a thick layer of mulch such as leaves, compost or straw. This layer will help insulate and protect it against our harsh winter weather.
